A defense official has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing secret information in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for MoD Staff
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.
He stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
